Choose a clinic that can offer multiple treatment options.
Patients and their health care providers need a variety of options for obesity treatments since any one treatment cannot work for every individual. The traditional advice "eat less exercise more" is simply not sufficient enough for everyone. ASBP provides guidance to its member physicians through a set of obesity medicine guidelines, which outline 4 medical weight loss methods: dietary modification, exercise prescription, behavior modification, and when appropriate medication.
Some individuals have an elevated BMI but have "healthy fat", and others may have a normal BMI but have "sick fat." BMI is not the only way to measure the presence of obesity. A good weight loss clinic should look at additional parameters of obesity AND ALSO how that obesity is affecting that patients body.
Choose a clinic that looks at parameters other than body mass index(BMI)
First choose a clinic with a physician who is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians
The ASBP is a professional medical society dedicated to educating and supporting physicians in the treatment of patients affected by obesity and related conditions
